Colorado woman gets new feet after losing hers in a car crash that left her trapped upside-down for six days

Krista Hopkins lost both feet last May after a horrific car crash that left her trapped upside-down for six days in her mangled car. Two passersby eventually spotted her vehicle about 140 from U.S. 285 just north of Fairplay. Hopkins, who was reported missing on April 29, 2014, was found inside her Chevy Malibu nearly a week later, upside down with no food or water.

Hopkins was severely injured, with multiple internal and external injuries. Both feet had to be amputated. This week she got new ones.

The new feet are bionic, including a battery pack that has to be charged every night, but which provides more of a real foot, heel-to-toe action. She is now learning to stand and walk all over again. Hopkins says that bionic feet make a big difference from those that just clomp around, especially when she has to follow her four kids around in Colorado’s uneven terrain.

Hopkins car was found on May 4, at the bottom of an embankment, upside down. She was spotted by a passerby who stopped to take pictures and noticed a glint of metal. Emergency responders found her alive inside the severely damaged car, resting upside down after flying 120 feet off the highway and then rolling 200 feet more into an aspen grove. When taken to the hospital her body temperature was just 77 degrees. Her internal organs were beginning to shut down and her feet were crushed.

One of the firefighters who treated Hopkins at the scene of the crash said she was trying to use a red and white umbrella to signal passengers on the highway. She had written messages on the white portions of the umbrella asking for help.

Two months after the crash Hopkins was given standard prosthetic feet, but the new bionic feet are much more flexible – literally. She had to have another surgery on her legs in December to help her new prosthetics fit better. She hopes to be able to run a race next year.
