The body parts that were found in a suitcase on a San Francisco sidewalk Jan. 28 have been identified as belonging to 58-year-old Omar Shahwan, of Vallejo. In addition to the suitcase, additional remains were located a half block away in a trash can. Authorities are still investigating the death.

Mark Andrus, 54, was arrested on Jan. 30, in connection with the discovery of the body but was later released. He died last Saturday from drug-related reasons. He reportedly went into septic shock and died after being rushed to a hospital. Andrus was reportedly a former roommate of Shahwan. He had been released from jail after the District Attorney’s office said that, although prosecutors were very disturbed by the case, there was insufficient evidence to for a murder charge. Four days later Andrus died, after admitting himself to the hospital.

The California Bureau of Forensic Services DNA lab helped to identify Shahwan’s remains. He had been missing  at the time the suitcase was discovered in the South of Market neighborhood. San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said that even though the main suspect is dead, the case is still alive.

Officer Grace Gatpandan, San Francisco Police Department spokesperson, said that Andrus was their primary person of interest. The public defender who represented him, Jeff Adachi, said that during the short time he represented Andrus he “found him to be a kind and engaging person.”

The identification of Shahwan’s body had to be made through DNA because the remains contained nether hands nor head. The victim’s father, Ali Shahwan, last saw his son on Jan. 21, and had been holding out hope for three weeks that his son was alive and well. He said that after the body was discovered he and his daughter both gave DNA samples for investigators. The testing, which can take weeks to complete, was made a top priority.

Ali Shahwan was frustrated by Andrus’ release from prison, but prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to hold him. Andrus and Omar Shahwan lived together in 2010.
