3 straight snowstorms for the Northeast, Boston slammed

Only 9 days into February, winter storm warnings are in place across large portions of the Northeast, including Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and Connecticut, and the snowfall accumulation has already made this month the fifth-snowiest February on record.

The already snow covered New England region received 20 more inches of snow on Monday, tipping scales and altering record books. Since January 15 Boston has seen more than 63 inches of snow, breaking the 1978 record for most snow in a 30-day period. With estimates placed at 12 to 16 inches of snow by the National Weather Service, the record may be in jeopardy again. Upstate New York is expecting 8 to 12 inches of snowfall by the end of the storm Tuesday. Directly following this third regional storm, cold air will vortex in, quickly followed by more forcasted snow events for Thursday and Friday. Boston Mayor Walsh acknowledges the frusterations that come with a winter such as this, saying “This is snow like we’ve never seen before in the past.”

Schools have been closed in parts of the Northeast, including Boston, and will remain so on Tuesday. Mayor Walsh issued a snow emergency and parking ban for Boston on Sunday to allow room for snowplows to efficiently remove the accumulated snow. Cars violating the ban will be ticketed and towed. Metro, trolley, and commuter services will remain suspended Tuesday after being shut down Monday at 7 p.m. by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. Crews are checking the snow-damaged equipment for service and repair after close to 50 commuters were stranded on a disabled Red-Line train in Boston and needed evacuation Monday. “Stay indoors until the worst is over” urges the Mayor.

“It’s otherworldly,” said Shmuel Bollen, 50, of Boston. “Shoveling the driveway becomes like painting a bridge. As soon as you get to the end, you have to go back and start again.” Mondays snow depth reached a total of 37 inches, the largest depth ever recorded since weather records began in Boston. Two more potential snowstorms are being tracked for this upcoming weekend.  Light snow will come through for the Great Lakes Wednesday and then the Northeast Thursday. Following, another arctic front will spread a band of primarily light snow from the Great Lakes on Friday into the East on Saturday.
