Pennsylvania teen shoots classmate, then takes SnapChat selfie with body

Maxwell Marion Morton, a 16-year-old Pennsylvania high school student, was arrested Friday and charged with murder after confessing that he fatally shot a classmate in the face, then took a selfie photograph with the victim’s body. Ryan Mangan, 16, was found dead at his home in a Pittsburgh suburb by his mother on Wednesday, Feb. 4. On Monday Morton was in custody without bail. He was arraigned as an adult and is charged with first-degree murder, criminal homicide and criminal possession of a gun.

The SnapChat selfie photograph that was apparently taken at the murder scene led police to suspect Morton after he sent the picture to another boy’s phone. The boy was able to save the message and showed it to his mother. She called the police to report that her son had received a grisly photo on his cell phone. The affidavit signed by police report that the photograph showed Mangan sitting in a chair with a gunshot wound to his face and “a black male taking the ‘selfie.'” The person taking the photo was facing the camera with the victim behind him. “Maxwell” was written across the top of the photo.

The mother of the boy who alerted authorities said her son had also been sent texts that were apparently from Morton reading “Ryan was not the last one,” and “Told you I cleaned up the shells.” Police did not find any bullet shells at the murder scene on Wednesday. However, after searching Morton’s house on Friday they discovered a 9mm handgun and matching shell casing under the basement steps.

Mangan’s girlfriend, Brianna Kelly, told police that Morton had sent her a Facebook message hours after the shooting. She said Morton told her “Ryan got shot in the head. I’m sorry.”

When searching the deceased boy’s phone, police found a picture of him holding a semi-automatic handgun. Investigators have not identified a motive in the case. Morton is due back in court on Feb. 19 for a preliminary hearing.
