L.A. high-speed car chase ends with carjacking suspect apparently shot by police on live TV

A wild high-speed pursuit in downtown Los Angeles and surrounding neighborhoods on Monday evening resulted in four separate car crashes, an armed carjacking and the apparent shooting of the male suspect by police captured on live television.

Around 5 p.m. police responded to reports of a stolen car. Officers chased the suspect through city streets, with several crashes resulting. He first hit a pickup truck at a busy intersection, then minutes later hit another vehicle but was able to keep driving. A third collision in South Gate resulted in sparks coming from the vehicle, but he continued speeding through intersections. The suspect was reported driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic part of the time, and was said to be traveling 50 to 60 mph on surface streets near the 101 Freeway.

The suspect continued to flee police until a nearly head-on collision left the car immobile. The suspect jumped out of his disabled vehicle, pulled a gun,and carjacked a woman at the scene, then fleeing in her vehicle. The gun could be seen from news helicopters who were circling the scene.

The chase continued across the city, with the vehicle eventually becoming wedged in traffic in Montebello on Via Campo, off the 60 freeway. The suspect fled on foot, trying unsuccessfully to carjack two more vehicles. As one of those vehicles sped away, police officers, who were pursuing on foot, opened fire. Police have confirmed that an officer-involved shooting ended the pursuit, although it is unclear whether the suspect was actually hit. News video shows the suspect hitting the ground, where he is quickly surrounded by officers and placed under arrest.

The suspect was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital. His condition has not been released. Traffic was snarled on the 60 freeway due to the incident, causing delays in the evening commute.
