U.S. to expand Jordan funding to $1 billion in fight against ISIS

U.S. aid raised to $1 billion per year for Jordan as they fight ISIS in regional unrest

King Abdullah II of Jordan will receive increased financial assistance from the U.S. after Wednesday’s dawn executionsof Sajida al-Rishawi, a failed suicide bomber, and Ziad al-Karbouli, a previous top lieutenant of Iraq’s Al Qaeda regime. The executions took place less that 12 hours after news of an executed Jordanian pilot came to light, confirmed by the Jordanian state news agency Petra. The pilot, first lieutenant Moaz al-Kasasbeh, was burned alive in a cage while onlookers filmed and later shared the video, with ISIS taking claim.

U.S. officials stated Tuesday that financial assistance to Jordan will be doubled over the next three years. The past three years Jordan has received $660 million per year, this will be raised to $1 billion per year for the next three years. Washington states, “The United States recognizes Jordan’s increased immediate needs resulting from regional unrest.”

In December, President Obama and the Jordanian King made renewal agreements of their directive of understanding for assistance in Jordan. State department officials released the terms of the deal on Tuesday, citing many reasons for the memorandum and increased aid. Jordan remains one of the United States’s strongest allies in the Middle East and has a vital role in the fight against ISIS. Obama expressed strong support for the American-led alliance of six Arab nations, Jordan included.

Economic aid from the United States has been supplied to Jordan since 1951 and today totals over $13.8 billion. This relationship has held a prominent military segment since 1957, primarily because of the unique place Jordan is located geographically. An assessment conducted by the Congressional Research Service describes conflicts taking place in and around Jordan that continually prompts cooperation with the United States, “involvement in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, the civil war in neighboring Syria, and U.S.-Jordanian military and intelligence cooperation.”
