The resignations will shrink Obama's inner circle for his last two years in office and mark an expansion of Clinton's as she gets closer to announcing a run at the White House in 2016.
President Obama will be losing two of his highest-ranking advisers, who will be resigning in the next few weeks, according to the White House.
First, communications director Jennifer Palmieri is expected to step down in the spring and likely will serve int he same capacity for Hillary Rodham Clinton in her as-yet-unannounced election campaign, the Associated Press reported. Also, senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer, who has been one of the president’s longest-serving aides, will also be leaving soon, although his plans aren’t known.
The White House had announced not long ago that the presidential counselor John Podesta would be leaving this month, meaning that Obama’s staff will be shrinking considerably for his last two years in office.
The resignations point to a merger of staff between Obama’s team and Clinton’s as the latter appears to be the clear front-runner in the Democrat’s next pick for president in 2016. Podesta is expected to go to her campaign and become her chairman, as he worked in President Bill Clinton’s administration.
There has been no firm date for the departure of Palmieri, and she will remain in her role for at least a few more weeks. Pfeiffer, on the other hand, expects to leave in mid-March.
Another Obama aide that left recently is Ron Klain, his Ebola strategy coordinator.
As the 2016 campaign heats up, the departures will place some pressure on the Obama Administration to get things done before he loses his ability to drive policy and legislation.
Pfeiffer, 39, has been with the president since he was a senator, serving as a staff member. He eventually developed a deep bond that included a shared love of basketball.
