“Alluha Akbar” shouted at Jewish UC-Davis students during student government vote

Muslim and pro-Palestinian students disrupted a student meeting at the University of California-Davis campus as they waved Palestinian flags and shouted “Allahu Akbar” at Jewish and pro-Israel students. The incident was recorded on a student’s phone.

The term “Allahu Akbar” means “God [Allah] is greater” in Arabic and is used as a profession of Muslim faith, but is also frequently shouted at anti-Israel and anti-American protests as a declaration of loyalty to radical Islam. The phrase was infamously used by Maj. Nidal Hasan as he opened fire on soldiers at Ft. Hood, Texas in 2009.

Two days later, the off-campus fraternity house of the Jewish Alpha Epsilon Pi was spray-painted with swastikas. The vandalism occurred between 3 and 9 a.m. and is under investigation as a hate crime by Davis police according to the Sacramento Bee newspaper. UC-Davis Chancellor, Linda P.B. Katehi called the behavior anti-Semitic, saying, “Nothing rivals a swastika as a more portent or offensive symbol of hatred and violence toward our Jewish community.”

In a show of support for the Jewish UC-Davis community, the Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations Sacramento Chapter, Basim Elkarra, said on  Monday that the group “condemns all acts of hate targeting members of any faith or background, including rejecting anti-Semitism.”

The UC-Davis meeting was held to debate the resolution that would, in theory, ask the university to boycott Israel by divesting its investment portfolio of stock in corporations that do business there. Caterpillar, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Motorola, and Northrup Grumman are targets of the divestment movement.

The 8-2 vote makes UC-Davis the seventh of the state’s nine campuses to pass the resolution, in addition to Santa Cruz, San Diego, Irvine, Riverside, Los Angeles, and Berkeley. With each vote, the University Board of Regents, that control the university’s investment portfolio, have repeated it will not divest from companies doing business with Israel.

Following the vote, a member of the student senate, Azka Fayyaz, posted: “Hamas & Sharia law have taken over UC Davis.”
