Ex-Power Ranger Ricardo Medina not charged in stabbing death of roommate

Apparently the sword of justice isn’t always so sharp or swift. The Hollywood Reporter announced that actor Ricardo Medina, Jr, was released from jail without charges pending further investigation into the death of his roommate.

Medina, Jr, is best known for his role as Red Lion Ranger in 2002’s series Power Ranger Wild Force. He also played the villain Deker on Power Rangers Samurai. He was jailed on Saturday January 31st in Palmdale, CA after an altercation with his roommate, Joshua Sutter.

TMZ reports that Medina and Sutter were arguing in their apartment, and Medina locked himself in his bedroom with his girlfriend. Sutter allegedly broke down the bedroom door and Medina stabbed him in the abdomen with a samurai replica sword. Medina himself called 911 and waited for emergency workers to arrive and take Sutter to the hospital.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Medina’s bail was originally set at $1 million dollars. However, after a court date on Tuesday, the Los Angeles DA ‘s Office declined to press charges at that time, asking police to complete further investigation into the incident.   While they have not ruled out charging Medina later when the investigation has been concluded, by law Medina had to be released on Tuesday.

Medina spoke to reporters outside the courthouse, saying that he was “very, very, very sorry for what happened. I’m very happy to be out of jail, and my heart goes out to the Sutter family.”

The BBC printed quotes from Medina’s lawyer, Allen Bell, who was gratified by the lack of charges. “There simply aren’t facts here for a crime,” he said. “It is a self defense case.”
