The poll found that mothers -- and fathers as well -- have a heavy influence on the love lives of their children, and parents tend to be perfectly happy to have that influence.
Want to win over that special someone in your life? It may begin and end with her mother.
A new poll by the Associated Press finds that six in 10 young women say that their mothers’ approval is “extremely” or “very” important to them when they want to get involved with someone, suggesting that maybe those flowers you ordered shouldn’t go your date, but to her mother instead, according to an AP report.
A minuscule 6 percent of women under the age of 30 said that their mother’s opinion doesn’t matter when dating, according to the poll, and a full four in 10 young ladies would ditch a guy their mom disliked, and 16 percent have said they’ve done exactly that before.
Young men tend to worry a little less about their mothers’ opinion, but the maternal influence was strong even then. Half of men between the ages of 18 and 29 said mom’s approval was at least very important if a relationship was going to get serious, according to the AP report.
What about dads? They have plenty of influence as well, with half of young women and 40 percent of young men placing a great importance on the influence of the paternal side when it comes to a relationship turning a corner.
Even so, the poll finds that young men aren’t necessarily to marry someone like their mother. A full 51 percent said it’s better to find a woman who is the opposite of their parents.
As it turns out, the parents are perfectly fine with having this influence. About seven out of 10 parents would like to have at least a little influence over the lives of their grown children when it comes to love — although most won’t admit to wanting to control it. However, they aren’t as optimistic in their changes: six in 10 believe they have any influence at all.
