Affordable Care Act hits 9.5 million

The U.S. government is reporting that more than 9.5 million people have signed up for 2015 individual health insurance on the new exchanges created under the Affordable Care Act. The Department of Health and Human Services signed up or automatically enrolled more than 7.1 million people through HealthCare.gov as of Jan. 16. The federally run website covers 37 states.

The remaining thirteen states and the District of Columbia run their own websites. 2.4 million people selected a plan or were automatically enrolled in these areas. That data is through Jan. 18th in California and through Jan. 17 for the District and the remaining states.

Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell set a target of 9.1 million enrollees  by the end of 2015. The Congressional Budget Office is predicting 12 million enrollees by year’s end. Burwell expects the exchanges will be a boon to the American people.

“The vast majority are able to lower their costs even further by getting tax credits,” she said in a statement.

HHS did not say how many of the 9.5 million had paid their premiums and become fully enrolled in the program. Last April, the administration announced over 8 million enrollees but just 6.7 million remained at the end of the year. The agency reports that 87 percent of federal marketplace applicants used financial assistance .
