‘Not taking any chances’: American 19-year-old sentenced four years for wanting to join ISIS

This marks the first time an American has been convicted for attempting ties with ISIS.

On April 8th 2014, Shannon Conley of Colorado was arrested for conspiring to provide material support to the terrorist group, ISIS. Now, nine months later, Conley has been sentenced to four years in prison by a judge.

Shannon Conley, at the young age of nineteen, converted to Islam, took on a Muslim name, became engaged to an ISIS fighter and prepared to leave her life here behind forever. Her parents blame the internet. Conley began researching Islam and found herself on the extremist side of Islam. She befriended the wife of an ISIS soldier online and decided she wanted to lead the same life.

When she was picked up by the FBI in April, she was boarding a plane to Turkey. Her plan was to marry the ISIS soldier she met online, Yousr Mouelhi, and work as a nurse in ISIS camps. She is a certified nurse’s aide in Colorado.

While she is claiming now to have been confused, naive and mentally ill, the judge still gave her four years in prison. He was not convinced by her sudden change of heart, and listed examples of her jihadi zeal at the sentencing. He told the court that she once entered a meeting with the FBI wearing a shirt that said, “Sniper don’t run, you’ll die trying”. Investigating authorities had tried to stop her with many warnings and her response was that she’d rather go to jail than do nothing. She also wanted to talk about violent jihad with a female imam that went to visit her, and she still signs her letters “behind enemy lines”. With all this evidence of a deep-rooted belief piled against her, the judge didn’t believe she had changed her mind in such short a time.
