Blake Shelton is scheduled to premiere on Saturday Night Live as host and musical guest on Saturday. Wednesday, Shelton tweeted that he was rehearsing and writing for “@nbcsnl…Drunk.”
The Lonely Tonight singer told CMT Hot 20 Countdown that he was ready for the show during rehearsals. He said that if there was something that everyone watching at home knew about him it was that he was “comfortable with making a complete ass out of myself.” He claimed he was “a natural” at poking fun at himself.
Shelton is the first country star to host the late night sketch show since Taylor Swift–who has since declared herself a pop artist–did in 2009. However, this is not Shelton’s first run on TV. Aside from performing on awards shows, Christmas specials and showing up in pizza commercials, Shelton has appeared on screens in millions of homes as a coach and mentor on NBC’s The Voice, one of the only singing competitions to give American Idol a run for its money.
Shelton said that his time as a coach on The Voice has led people to suggest him as a host on SNL, but he never thought he would actually become involved. He said that he had always thought about singing and performing on the show. He added that performing is what he does, but “this other stuff” is not what he does. Little is known about his much-anticipated monologue on the show.
According to Taste of Country, Blake’s wife and country star Miranda Lambert will not be able to attend the live broadcast because of her concert schedule, and she is a little worried about Blake’s appearance on SNL. Shelton explained that Lambert is always the one to warn him when he is joking and “taking it too far into gross land or whatever” in public. He compared her to a stage mom and said that she would not be at the show to tell him when he is taking it too far. But Shelton seems to be at ease and is ready for his performances.
And he has had some practice. Thursday, he returned as a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, who works diligently to embarrass Shelton when he stops by. The two participated in the Whisper Challenge, a popular game made famous on YouTube where one person whispers a phrase and the other has to guess what it is while wearing headphones that blast music, and Shelton caused Fallon to laugh so hard he nearly fell from his chair.
The comical country singer has moved from a small-town star to a giant of pop culture. And it looks like that will not be changing any time soon. He is set to return as a coach and mentor on The Voice. Shelton tweeted on Jan. 17 that he had been filming for two days for the eighth season “drunk.”
His appearance on Saturday Night Live will only push him further beyond the country music bubble in Nashville. And his presence as a TV personality continues to increase. Saturday Night Live happens late Saturday on NBC.
