The measles outbreak that started at Disneyland has infected as many as 70 people. Health officials are keeping close watch on the number of people infected so they can work to control it.
Nearly all of the measles cases are still located in California and most of them can be traced to people who visited Disneyland. Although 62 of the 70 cases are in California, the measles infections have also extended to six other states. These states include Colorado, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and the newest one is in Arizona, a 50-year old woman who visited the theme park. There are also some cases across the border in Mexico.
Besides the number of actual measles cases, there are many others who are being affected by the virus, even though they don’t actually have it yet. The reason for this is that simply being in the room with someone who has the measles is enough to get the virus.
This has caused 30 children in California to be isolated at home. A child who was infected went to a doctor’s office. After learning of the infection, the doctors there told the parents to keep their children at home and isolate them for 21 days. Those who had children too young to get the vaccine were also told the same thing.
In another incident that occurred in Colorado, 250 people were notified that they may have been exposed to measles. A patient who had the virus came into the offices at the Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, and went to the emergency room, the room for CAT scans, and on the fourth floor.
Most of the cases are occurring among people who have not received the measles vaccine. The debate over whether or not to get vaccinated continues.
Many health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Vaccine Education Center, and today, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), are now urging parents to get their children vaccinated. Dr. Paul Offit, who is the director of the Vaccine Education Center, and who also serves as an attending physician at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Division of Infectious Diseases, said that unvaccinated kids are at risk of developing health problems because parents today do not seem to realize the danger and do not fear the disease.
Measles is considered a respiratory disease. It is also considered to be one of the most contagious diseases known to the human race. It can be spread through the air and on surfaces. It also can be fatal to one or two people for every 1,000 people who get infected.
The measles virus is not as harmless as some consider it to be. Prior to the vaccine, there were about 48,000 people who had to be hospitalized from it each year. About one person in 20 would develop pneumonia, and roughly one person out of every 1,000 would become disabled because of encephalitis.
The measles virus is spreading the fastest in communities where there are the most unvaccinated kids and adults. Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, the vice chair of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases, has mentioned that there are some medications that can make people more susceptible to getting the measles infection.
