Weezy releases new music as apology for his continuously delayed album, 'Tha Carter V.'
Even though Lil Wayne’s fifth album in his Tha Carter series remains postponed due to infighting with his label Cash Money, fans don’t have to wait any longer for new Weezy music. The rapper’s latest apology mixtape, Sorry 4 the Wait 2, released on Wednesday and is available for download at DatPiff.
Lil Wayne’s first Sorry 4 the Wait mixtape came out in July 2011, and served as an apology to fans who were anxiously waiting for his delayed album Tha Carter IV. The album ended up dropping the next month, but due to his numerous issues with Cash Money and label CEO Birdman, fans likely shouldn’t expect Tha Carter V to be released in the near future. The album was originally due out in Oct. 2013, but was postponed numerous times before getting a firm release date was Dec. 9, 2014 that was also eventually postponed.
Sorry 4 the Wait 2 features numerous guest artists, including 2 Chainz and label mates Mack Maine, Shanell, Christina Milian and Drake. The new mixtape features Weezy rapping to beats like Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love,” Rae Sremmurd’s “No Type,” iLoveMakonnen’s “Maneuvering,” Future’s “Shit,” and Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot Nigga.”
The cover for the mixtape, which shows an arm with a handcuff secured around the wrist but free on the other end, is rumored to be a reference to Lil Wayne’s relationship with his label. The rapper publicly called himself a creative and financial “prisoner” to Cash Money, and the cover artwork may be a hint that he is almost free from the label.
“Cash Money is an army, I’m a one-man army, and if them niggas comin’ for me, I’m goin’ out like Tony. Now I don’t want no problems, I just want my money,” he raps on the opening track “CoCo.”
