GLAAD Media Awards nominees announced for 2015

Actress and activist Laverne Cox, “Stay With Me,” singer Sam Smith and the new Amazon drama Transparent are among the nominees at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.

The media advocacy organization announced the nominations on Wednesday for its 26th annual awards ceremony, which recognizes the music, movie, television and journalism industries for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Cox, the transgender star of the Netflix drama Orange is the New Black, is being recognized for the documentary Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.

Smith, who recently went public with his new boyfriend on Instagram, received a nomination for his album “In the Lonely Hour.”

Transparent, Amazon’s critically acclaimed series about a man looking to undergo gender-reassignment surgery, was recently honored with a Golden Globe for best TV series, musical or comedy. Lead actor Jeffrey Tambor also received a Golden Globe nod.

“For nearly 30 years, the GLAAD Media Awards have raised the bar for inclusion in news and entertainment, transforming LGBT representation in media and moving the dial for acceptance across the globe,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “It’s been a remarkable year for equality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the visibility LGBT people have gained across media. This year’s nominees, including expanded categories in Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series, reflect the widening diversity of LGBT images and storylines that are closing the gap to full acceptance.”

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on May 9, 2015, and in Los Angeles on March 21, 2015. Individual honorees for each city will be revealed in the following weeks.
