What hiring of Kubiak can do for the Broncos

What the hiring of Kubiak could mean for the Broncos offense.

The Denver Broncos organization officially came to an agreement with Gary Kubiak on Monday, signing the former Houston Texans coach to a four-year deal. Kubiak, a veteran coach serving nearly 30 years in the league, was fired from the Texans after the 2013 season. He spent this year as the offense coordinator for the Ravens, leading their offense to the most points scored in the organization’s history.

“Having coached on three Super Bowl champion teams and 11 playoff teams, Gary knows what it will take to deliver another World Championship to Broncos fans,” stated Broncos’ GM John Elway. “While there is no question he is a Bronco, what Gary has learned from his other opportunities around the league — especially in his eight seasons as a head coach — will tremendously benefit our organization.”

Kubiak is no stranger to the Denver Broncos; in fact the team is the very place he started his career in the NFL. From 1989-91, Kubiak played quarterback for the Broncos, being selected in the eighth round he ironically backed up to the very man that hired him, John Elway. After leaving the Broncos as a player, he would soon find his way back to the team- but this time as a coach. From 1995-2002, Kubiak was the quarterbacks coach on the Broncos, and was then promoted to offensive coordinator until he would leave the team to go coach the Texans.

Being the only coach to ever lead the Texans to the playoffs, Kubiak only went 63-66 in eight seasons with the team. By the end of the 2013 season, it looked like the end of the road for Kubiak was approaching, but the 53-year-old coach had something left to prove. He led the Ravens to an offensive record-breaking season despite losing Ray Rice to a domestic violence scandal.

With Kubiak at the helm, it is not entirely clear what to expect. The organization has a press conference planned for Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET, in which John Elway and other members of the Broncos’ organization, including the newly appointed head coach, will unveil the details of the upcoming season. What can be expected however, is for Kubiak to install his extraordinarily effective signature zone-blocking run scheme into Denver’s offense.

Since he was made offensive coordinator of the Broncos in 1995, Kubiak has had eight different running backs rush for at least 1,000 yards in season. Justin Forsett joined Arian Foster, Steve Slaton, Mike Anderson, Reuben Droughns, Clinton Portis, Olandis Gary and Terrell Davis after having a tremendous season under the coach.
What does this mean for Peyton Manning and rest of the Broncos offense? Likely, given Manning decides to stay around another season, it means more of the same for Denver’s already unstoppable offense. Manning has been acclimated with the zone-running scheme for a better part of his long standing career, meaning Kubiak should be able to install it flawlessly into their current system.

No one is more excited about the hiring of Kubiak as GM John Elway, as they share similar philosophies. Elway ensures Broncos’ fans that this was the right move, saying that the team is on the doorstep of being at the next level. While an undecided Peyton Manning is pivotal to the future decisions of the franchise, Kubiak, along with the backing of the Broncos’ organization, remain positive and hopeful taking the future in stride.
