The Lebanese beauty queen defended herself by saying that Miss Israel had ambushed her with the photo, and that she had been careful to avoid appearing in pictures with her, an excuse that may not be enough for the Lebanese government.
Outrage boiled over in Lebanon after Miss University contestants representing Israel and Lebanon appeared in a selfie together along with two other contestants from Slovenia and Japan.
Because Lebanese law forbids its citizens from appears with anyone from Israel, which it is technically still at war with, many from her home country are demanding that she be stripped of her title, according to a New York Post report.
The Lebanese beauty queen, Saly Greige, defended herself, saying that she was ambushed with the selfie by Israeli Doron Matalon and that she was “very cautious to avoid being in any photo of communication with Miss Israel,” who tried several times to take a photo with her, she said.
The photo shows the two women smiling side by side along with Miss Japan and Miss Slovenia. Although many praised the photo, the government is investigating the situation, and her pleas may not be enough to save her from losing her title.
There is precedent for the Lebanese government acting this way: in 1993, it stripped Ghada al-Turk of her title after a photo was released showing her arm-in-arm with her Israeli counterpart.
Miss Lebanon’s agent said it was a conspiracy on the part of Miss Israel to get her competitor stripped of her crowd, and that she was stalking her with her camera drawn in order to ambush her, the Lebanese media reported.
Matalon wrote on her Facebook page that the incident “doesn’t surprise me, but it still makes me sad,” and that it was “too bad you cannot put the hostility out of the game, only for three weeks of an experience of a lifetime that we can meet girls from around the world and also from the neighboring country,” according to the Post report.
