Two supercars unveiled at Detroit auto show as industry’s optimism grows

Ford GT made a big splash with the surprise unveiling of its GT model, which will go on sale next year.

Two supercars wowed attendees of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in a sign that things are starting to finally pick up for the auto industry.

The Acura NSX and Ford GT, both made in the United States, made an appearance at the show at a time when the auto industry is no longer as focused on survival and can create more exotic, niche cars, according to a Columbus Dispatch report.

The auto show is an annual showcase of new models and concept cars, and is open through the public for a week. Auto sales have been rising in the United States for the past five years ever since the Great Recession began, with 16.4 million units sold in 2014 and projections that that figure will continue to rise in 2015.

Ford brought out a blue GT at a morning presentation in an unexpected move, driving the car onto the floor of Joe Louis Arena. The company will begin building the model next year, 10 years after its predecessor sold at a starting price of $140,000. The newest version of the GT will have a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that can produce 600 horsepower. It doesn’t have a price tag yet.

Hours later, Acura unveiled the NSX, which will go on sale before the end of the year and also boasts a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that can achieve 550 horsepower. The unveiling of the NSX was known in advance, unlike the GT.

The NSX’s price tag will be in the $150,000. The car is a successor to a model that was sold from 1990 to 2005.

Only wealthy customers will be afford the models at that price tag, but the models will also present opportunities to test technology that could be used on more inexpensive models.
