The child was airlifted to a hospital in Philadelphia, but died two hours later from her wounds.
A New Jersey mother was arrested on Saturday accused of killing her newborn child and then setting her on fire, leaving her burning in the middle of the road.
Police arrested 22-year-old Hyphernkemberly Dorvilier of Pemberton Township in suburban Philadelphia on one count of first degree murder, according to a Reuters report. She is being held on $500,000 bail.
Dorvilier allegedly doused the child with a flammable liquid before lighting her on fire, according to a statement put out by Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi and Pemberton Township Police Chief David Jantas.
Officers initially responded to a call of a fire in the middle of the road, and then they discovered the infant, which was taken to Saint Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia. She was reportedly still alive and breathing, but died two hours later from her wounds.
Dorvilier was immediately taken into custody.
The Burlington County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the child.
A resident, Davis Joseph, allegedly saw Dorvilier set the child on fire, and the woman told him that her dog had pooped in her car and she was burning it on the side of the road, according to an NBC Philadelphia report. However, Joseph’s wife heard the baby scream, and noticed that there was a newborn infant with its umbilical cord still attached. The woman tried to make a run for it but Joseph said he took her to the ground.
Dorvilier initially denied that the child was hers. When investigators at the scene decided that she was responsible for the child’s death, she was taken into custody.
Authorities say the child could have been left at a police station or hospital anonymously.
