NCAA agrees to restore wins to Penn State and Paterno; Sandusky victims upset

Paterno's family hailed the decision, which makes the late coach the winningest football coach of all time.

In a dramatic reversal, the NCAA has agreed to restore the wins it took from Penn State and Joe Paterno in the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal, but the move is provoking some negative reactions from the victims.

The boards of the NCAA and the university approved the agreement on Friday, which lifts sanctions that were imposed in 2012 and eliminates the black mark from the record of the Penn State athletic program. It also reinstates Paterno, who died in 2012, who is now officially the winningest coach in major college football history, according to an Associated Press report.

While Paterno’s family and many at university hailed the decision, victims of Jerry Sandusky said the NCAA is sending the wrong message.

Michael Boni, one of the lawyers for the victims who testified at the trial of Sandusky, said the wins were “tarnished” and should not have been reinstated, according to the report. He said that the university moved away from a genuine apology to an attitude that they had caved on the issue, which he said was “disappointing.”

NCAA said they made the move in order to end litigation that kept $60 million from being used to fund child-abuse prevention programs. Paterno’s family called it “a great victory” for those who “fought for the truth,” calling the penalties against the program an unjust attack. The family is angry that the university and the NCAA had agreed to the sanctions.

Paterno’s family also wants three former university officials to be cleared of criminal charges, including the former president, athletic director and vice president, who are accused of covering up complaints about Sandusky.
