The new hip-hop drama Empire is already making its presence felt, as Fox renews the hit show for a second season after airing only two episodes. The police procedural comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine and superhero drama Gotham was also picked up for additional seasons. Fox made the announcements on Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour.
Empire features Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard as Cookie and Lucious Lyon, formerly married and currently bitter rivals for dominance of the hip-hop production company they co-founded. The show has performed beyond industry expectations, tying the ABC drama How To Get Away With Murder as the most-watched series debut among adults 18-49, and then pulling off an even bigger surprise by rising in the Nielsen ratings for its second episode.
It’s possible audiences may even see some American Idol hopefuls guest-starring on the new show in cameo roles, which speaks to the impact the new show is already having in the realm of musical entertainment. The two shows air back-to-back on Wednesday nights. Terrence Howard seems on board with the suggestion. “It would be stupid not to,” the actor said.
In spite of ratings declining slightly for Gotham, Fox opted to renew it for a second season. The dark drama, set in the Batman universe and starring Ben McKenzie, focuses on the early career of lawmaker Commissioner Gordon. There’s still plenty of good ratings news for Gotham – it was Fox’s No. 1 show for men aged 18-49 and women aged 18-34. Comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which stars Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg, improved in ratings after it was moved to a Sunday night timeslot, and was renewed for a third season.
