Mitt Romney may run in 2016

“I’m giving some serious consideration to the future,” Mitt Romney said in a speech at the Republican National Convention. While he has yet to announce an intention to campaign for president for a third time, there is no doubt that he is thinking about it.

The 2012 Republican nominee purposed a slimmed-down strategy that would counteract the shortcomings of his last campaign. Whether this strategy is to be used by him or another candidate is unclear. The three-pronged agenda includes: making the world safer, providing opportunity for all Americans, and lifting people out of poverty.

“Under President Obama the rich have gotten richer, income inequality has gotten worse and there are more people in poverty in American than ever before,” Mr. Romney said.

He went on to describe the poverty rate in America a “human tragedy.” “The only policies that will reach into the hearts of the American people and pull people out of poverty and break the cycle of poverty are Republican principles, conservative principles.”

He gave no mention of the “social safety net” that was supposed to take care of the very poor as he did in his 2012 campaign.

Mr. Romney also indicated that were he to run again, he would be more open about his Mormon faith. He painted himself, not just as a businessman like many believe, but also as a minister who tends to the needy. He mentioned his wife, Anne, saying “she’s seen me work with people who are very poor and need assistance.”

Mrs. Romney has been rather reserved about her opinion of two more years on the campaign trail.

Mr. Romney did not spend too much time attacking the current president. Nor did he discuss his potential rivals for the Republican Party nomination. He instead emphasized the need for the party to have an untied front for the upcoming election.

However, the party may not be united around him. Since Mr. Romney first revealed last week that he was considering running for a third time, there has been significant backlash from Republicans. Many would prefer to move on from the 2012 failure. Mr. Romney’s previous campaign has been harshly criticized. Some feel that it was his own deficiencies that caused the party to lose the presidency last election. The general consensus at the convention was that Mr. Romney is a good man, however, he should step aside and let other candidates run.
