Frozen’s Idina Menzel to perform National Anthem at Superbowl XLIX

Broadway mainstay Idina Menzel can add her name to the list of musical heavyweights who have performed the Star-Spangled banner prior to kickoff at the Superbowl. The NFL confirmed that Menzel, who became a pop-culture phenomenon as the voice of Elsa in Disney’s 2014 megahit Frozen, will perform the National Anthem at the start of Superbowl XLIX at Glendale, Arizona’s University of Phoenix Stadium on February 1.

R&B singer John Legend will also be lending his voice to the event, performing “America the Beautiful.”

Menzel had this to say about the announcement on Twitter, commenting, “It was 1991 and I remember it well: Whitney sings the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Almost as glorious as her voice was her huge radiant smile. I am so humbled and honored to be asked this year.”

No statement has been announced yet from Legend, but wife Chrissy Teigen retweeted a comment from NFL.com reporter Jeff Darlington that read, “And the very smooth John Legend of @ChrissyTeigen fame will be singing America the Beautiful at Super Bowl. Almost to the two-week countdown!”

It would be difficult for Menzel to top her 2014; besides the blockbuster success of Frozen and her signature song from the film, “Let it Go,” which sold 3.5 million copies in the U.S., she achieved global recognition when John Travolta famously blundered her name at the 2014 Academy Awards, introducing her as “Adele Dazeem” right before she was about to perform the song. But with her new gig, 2015 looks to be off to a stellar start for the chanteuse.

In addition to Menzel and Legend, the musical lineup at this year’s Super Bowl will also include Katy Perry, who will headline the halftime show with special guest Lenny Kravitz.
