Sentinel Oklahoma Police Chief shot while investigating school bomb threat

The Police Chief for the city of Sentinel, OK, was shot Thursday while investigating a report of a bomb threat called in to a local school. Chief Louis Ross was shot three times while searching the home of a person suspected of calling in the bomb threat.

According to a Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesperson, Chief Ross was inside the home of the bomb threat suspect. Chief Ross had cleared one bedroom and was in the process of clearing a second room when the shots were fired.

Chief Ross was struck four times, three struck him in the chest and one in the arm. The bullets that struck the chief in the chest were stopped by a bullet proof vest he was wearing, the one that struck him in the arm did cause a significant injury. Chief Ross was transported to a hospital in Hobart, OK and is reported to be in stable condition.

According to a statement from Sentinel Mayor Sam Dlugonsky, the drama unfolded Thursday when person called a bomb threat into the Community Action Head Start program. Police were able to trace the bomb threat back to a suspect who resided in Sentinel.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations confirmed that at approximately 4 AM a 911 call was made to local authorities, during that call a male stated that there were explosive devices planted at the head start program.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad responded to the Community action center to check for any explosive devices. Police were able to trace the 911 call to a private residence in the 200 block of South 4th street in Sentinel, OSBI reported.

Chief Ross and deputies from the Washita County Sheriff’s Department went to the home to investigate the threat, it has been reported that the chief, who usually does not were a bullet proof vest, borrowed one from a Washita Sheriff’s deputy prior to making entry into the residence.

At approximately 9:45 am CST the officers made forced entry entry into the residence when the shooting occurred. Police also stated they found bomb making materials in the home.

An Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations spokesman described the suspected shooter, as a male in his mid-30s, The OSBI also reported that the suspect had recently posted statements on a social media account about the terrorist group ISIS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

In a statement made by Sentinel Mayor Dlugonski , he doubts the shooter was connected to any terrorist group. “I’ve known that kid all of his life,” Dlugonski said. “I don’t think he was tied to the Islamic State in any way.”

Law enforcement authorities have not yet released the name of the bomb threat suspect or the suspect in the shooting of Chief Ross. In an interview with local media a neighbor who identified himself as David Delk, said the man who lives in the house where the shooting occurred Thursday morning is named Dallas Horton.

According to the neighbor, Horton kept to himself and wore a lot of black. “He wasn’t all that friendly,” Delk said. Mayor Dlugonski described Horton as a “gun enthusiast” and a “survivalist.”

Classes in the Sentinel public school district were canceled Thursday while police investigated the incident. Classes will resume Friday.
