Senior officials at U.S. Secret Service reassigned

Four senior officials at the U.S. Secret Service are being forced out of their current positions in a recent house-cleaning, as reported by Reuters. The assistant directors of protection, investigations, technology, and public affairs have been told they are being reassigned, according to an official speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Acting Director Joseph Clancy stated, “Change is necessary to gain a fresh perspective on how we conduct business. I am certain any of our senior executives will be productive and valued assets either in other positions at the Secret Service or the (homeland security) department.”

Clancy testified before Congress last November. He spoke of a need to establish a better sense of trust within the agency. He noted that some employees were discussing their concerns with persons outside the Secret Service rather than addressing them to senior staff.

The agency has been under scrutiny due to recent failures including a security breach last September in which a man armed with a knife jumped a fence and ran into the White House. Another incident occurred in Columbia in 2012, when agents brought prostitutes back to their hotel room. In 2011, a man from Idaho fired shots at the White House resulting in damage that wasn’t detected for four days.

The agency’s former director, Julia Pierson, resigned under fire on Oct. 1. The assistant director for Secret Service training recently disclosed that he would be retiring.
