In a recent poll, an overwhelming amount New Yorkers disapprove of police officers turning their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio. The event occurred during the funerals of two officers who were shot in their patrol car on Dec. 20.
The poll was released by Quinnipiac University, which showed that 69 percent of New Yorkers disapproved, while 77 percent said relations between the mayor and police are “generally bad.”
A local police union charges that the mayor is at fault for the deaths of the two officers. In the poll, 43 percent blame de Blasio, and 43 percent blame the police.
Police union head Patrick Lynch was quoted as saying that the mayor has “blood on his hands,” as reported by the Associated Press. Only 18 percent of New Yorkers support his statement.
De Blasio got bad reviews from the public as well on how he handled relations between the police and the community. 41 percent approved of his actions, while 52 percent disapproved.
A total of 1,182 New Yorkers were polled from Jan. 7 to Jan. 14 with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
