Florida home invader who killed a man and raped his wife to be executed today

Johnny Shane Kormondy was convicted more than 20 years ago, but countless appeals have delayed the execution until today.

A Florida man convicted of killing another man and then raping his wife during a home invasion is set to be executed today 20 years after the incident.

It took three trials and countless appeals, but Johnny Shane Kormondy is finally set to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Starke, according to an Associated Press report.

He was convicted of shooting Gary McAdams in the back of the head in his Pensacola home in 1993, and then he and two other invaders also raped McAdam’s wife Cecilia.

The 42-year-old Kormondy, the ringleader, was issued a death warrant in late November by Gov. Rick Scott, and would be the 21st prisoner to be executed since Scott had taken office back in 2011, which would tie him with former Gov. Jeb Bush for the most executions in the state since the practice was reinstated in 1979.

Kormondy was initially sentenced to death in 1994, but the state Supreme Court ordered a new sentencing hearing in 1997 due to a problem with testimony that was allowed during sentencing. Another jury in 1999 suggested that Kormondy should be executed.

The two other men who participated in the home invasion were sentenced to life in prison

The victim, Cecilia McAdams, plans to witness the execution of Kormondy, and said she would make a statement after Kormondy is dead. She has devoted her life to helping other victims of crime and teaching first responders how to approach victims of such crimes.

The Florida Catholic Conference has urged Gov. Scott to place a stay on the conviction, and his holding prayer vigils around the state.

Kormondy’s attorney has argued that Florida’s clemency process is unconstitutional, and that he was denied due process because the procedure happens in secret. Also, the attorney argues that Kormondy’s punishment is excessive because his accomplices were sentenced to life in prison.

Gary and Cecilia McAdams has returned from a high school reunion in July 1993 when the men forced their way into the home after having watched the neighborhood looking for a home to rob.
