Veteran anchor Ann Curry leaving NBC after 25 years

NBC won’t have Ann Curry to kick around anymore – at least not full-time.

The longtime journalist is leaving her full-time position as anchor-at-large at NBC after 25 years. Curry and the network will create a media partnership seeded by NBC Universal that will allow her to report on any platform or network within NBC News or within another medium. “This is about reaching for the edge of the future in journalism,” said Curry. “I am excited about working to become a valuable link between traditional media and what is to come.”

“We’re proud to support Ann in her new venture, and we look forward to more of her exceptional storytelling,” said Pat Fili-Krushel, chairman of NBCUniversal News Group. “She is committed to uncovering critical issues, humanizing them, and ultimately helping viewers understand and connect.”

Curry joined NBC in 1990 and had multiple jobs during her tenure, hosting NBC News at Sunrise and Dateline NBC. She also established solid credentials as a serious global journalist, reporting on the humanitarian refugee crisis in Kosovo and the violence and ethnic cleansing taking place in the Sudan.

Curry is perhaps best known for her role as lead anchor on the Today show alongside Matt Lauer, which culminated in a public and embarrassing on-air firing after just one year in the position. Curry was reduced to tears on national television in what was widely perceived as a serious PR blunder for the network. After Curry’s departure from Today, the show fell to second place in the morning show ratings and has remained there, behind rival program Good Morning America on ABC.

In her statement, Curry had nothing but praise for her former co-workers at NBC “and I look forward to what we will do ahead. At the same time, I can’t wait to expand my reach and work with people I admire in other places.”
