Ohio man arrested who sympathizes with ISIS and planned attack on U.S. Capitol

An Ohio man who sympathizes with ISIS and planned to attack the U.S. Capitol was arrested today by the FBI. Unknown to him, he had been working indirectly with agents, in a plot to blow up the U.S. Capitol.

The 20-year old man was identified earlier today as Christopher Lee Cornell from Green Township. The FBI said that he had planned to make and then detonate pipe bombs in Washington D.C.’s U.S. Capitol building. After they were detonated, he intended to use rifles to kill those who tried to escape the building.

Chris Cornell had used Twitter to try and contact members of ISIS. He agreed with and showed support on Twitter for terrorists groups and he made some threats against members of Congress, which he considered to be “enemies,” the criminal complaint indicated.

His complaints were written under the name of Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah. He started using the name last summer and claimed to be a member who was active in that organization.

Cornell believed that he was in contact with overseas members of ISIS, and was actually fulfilling their plans. Even though he had received the OK to carry out the attacks, he was actually working with a source that had been cooperating with the FBI in order to get favors in his prosecution. It was for an unrelated case.

He did not want to wait for specific orders to come from ISIS. He wanted to form his own group in the U.S. that would cooperate with ISIS, and then go ahead and conduct the bombings.

Cornell had received instructions on how to build pipe bombs, and also did some research on his own. At some point, he met with others within Cincinnati on Oct. 17 and 18. He told them he needed some money to be able to buy guns.

He ultimately had saved enough money to buy the guns and ammunition he needed for his attack. When he was ready, he went to the Point Blank Range & Gunshop in the Colerain Township. He bought two AR-15 semi-automatic rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition.

Immediately after leaving the store, he was tackled and arrested. The manager of the store reported that the FBI agents arrived at the store just prior to Cornell’s arrival, and asked them to handle to sale for them.

Law enforcement sources said that the attack plans had never gone beyond the early stages. Although the Ohio man sympathizes with ISIS, his planned attack on the U.S. Capitol had never gotten to the stage where it had become a real threat to any lawmakers.
