Paltrow explains what went wrong with her three most famous celebrity relationships, and reveals she's okay with her estranged husband dating Jennifer Lawrence.
Gwyneth Paltrow has kept the details of her personal life relatively private ever since she and her estranged husband Chris Martin became “consciously uncoupled” last March, but in her interview with Howard Stern on Wednesday, the award-winning actress opened up about nearly every aspect of her life. Paltrow told Stern on his Sirius XM show intimate details about all of her most famous past loves, and even gave her thoughts on Martin’s rumored girlfriend, Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence.
Paltrow’s love life first became tabloid fodder back in 1995, when she and Brad Pitt fell in love on the set of Seven. The couple dated for nearly three years and got engaged, and Paltrow admitted to Stern that she “definitely fell in love with him,” adding that he was “so gorgeous and sweet.”
However, the relationship ended when Paltrow decided that she wasn’t ready to take the next step.
“I was such a kid. I mean I was 22 when we met and it’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make a decision when you’re 22 years old,” said Paltrow. “My father was so devastated when we broke up. My father loved him like a son.”
Soon after the breakup with Pitt, Paltrow began dating Ben Affleck, but she stated that the couple struggled throughout the three years of their on-and-off relationship because Affleck “wasn’t in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend.” While she said she and Pitt are “friendly” when they see each other, Paltrow revealed that she and Affleck are still actually close friends and that she thinks Affleck’s wife, Jennifer Garner, is “really great” and “hilarious.”
“Not only is she beautiful, but she’s so warm and she cooks and is so into her kids,” said Paltrow. “I had a girls’ dinner before the summer and she came over, she’s my neighbor. I really like her a lot.”
The Shakespeare in Love actress’ father, Bruce Paltrow, died in Oct. 2012, and she fell in love with Coldplay rocker Chris Martin during her period of mourning. Paltrow revealed that the hit Coldplay song “Fix You” was actually written for her, stating that the song was about “him trying to put me back together after my dad died.” She and Martin were married for 11 years before becoming “consciously uncoupled” last March, a phrase which Paltrow finally explained to Stern.
“The idea is you try to do it with minimal acrimony and you say, ‘Look, we have kids, we’re always going to be a family and let’s try to find all the positives in our relationship, all the things that brought us together, the friendship,'” explained Paltrow. “We actually have a really strong friendship and we laugh and we have fun.”
When Stern tried to get the 42-year-old actress to say something bad about Martin’s rumored new girlfriend Jennifer Lawrence and even hinted that the 24-year-old is a “maniac,” Paltrow kept her cool about the entire situation.
“I respect him as the father of my children and it’s his life and it’s his decision,” she said. “And I do think he loves the kids so much and I don’t think he’d be with someone who wasn’t great. And if I’m wrong, I’ll come back here and tell you.”
