Emmy-winning choreographer Derek Hough says goodbye to ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Derek Hough, arguably the most acclaimed hoofer in the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ cast, will not appear in Season 20 of the long-running variety show, which returns to ABC in March. Hough will be taking the lead role in the New York Spring Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. “I am ecstatic that I’ll able to extend my passion for performing to the Great Stage of Radio City Music Hall in ‘New York Spring Spectacular.’ Performing at Radio City Music Hall in a show that celebrates everything that is beloved about New York City is a dream. I can’t wait to show fans this production … it’s going to be like nothing they’ve seen me in before,” Hough told People magazine.

Hough is keeping his dancing shoes busy; in 2014 he joined the cast of ‘Nashville’, a musical drama on ABC.

Since joining the show in 2007, Hough has won the coveted mirror-ball trophy with his partners a record five times. He also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography in 2013 for three routines that he choreographed on the show. Hough’s sister Julianne, also a dancer, currently sits on the panel with fellow judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman, the show’s resident curmudgeon.

The seven-week engagement will feature Hough as Jack, a man with a special mission who will receive an eternal reward if he’s able to help a man named Bernie keep his position as a New York City tour guide. Celebrity cameos will include Donald Trump, Martha Stewart and Henrik Lundqvist. Previews for ‘Spectacular’ at Radio City Music Hall will begin on March 12, and the run of the show extends through May 3.
