Colbert officially takes over the Late Show in September

Steven Colbert will officially become the new host of CBS”s The Late Show on September 9th. CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler made the announcement Monday at the winter meeting of the Television Critics Association.

Colbert will replace long time host David Letterman, who announced his retirement last April after an amazing 32 year run as Late Show Host; debuting on NBC in 1982 before moving to CBS in 1993 to the present. Although he usually came in second in the ratings behind Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show on NBC, Letterman established a devoted following with his signature Top Ten Lists and Stupid Pet Tricks.

Colbert first gained attention as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, which he joined in its second season in 1997, before getting his own show, The Colbert Report in 2005. Colbert presented himself as a conservative, similar to Fox’s Bill O’Reily, presenting humorous takes on the news events along with interviews of politicians, authors, reports and celebrities.

Colbert has also authored four books, and co-authored another. His most popular have been satirical takes on Bill O’Reily’s political works such as America (The Book): A Citizens’ Guide to Democracy Inaction and his most popular, I Am America (And So Can You!).

CBS is talking to David Letterman about possible fill-in programming between the time Letterman retires in May and Colbert takes over in September.
