Another five individuals on the bus were sent to the hospital, and four of them were in critical condition.
A prison bud skidded off an icy overpass in West Texas and smashed into an oncoming train, killing 10 and injuring five, authorities said.
The bus careened off an overpass on Interstate 20 and landed on train tracks near Odessa, where a freight train then struck it, according to Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson as quoted in the Los Angeles Times.
The bus was on its way to the Sanchez Unit in El Paso from the Middleton Unit in Abilene when the accident happened at 7:30 a.m. this morning. The crash killed eight inmates and two correctional officers, officials said, and also injured a staff member and four other inmates, who were sent to the Medical Center in Odessa. Four were in critical condition and the fifth was in serious condition.
The white prison bus had been crumpled by the train and was sitting on its side, with most of the damage to the top and undercarriage.
The Union Pacific freight train was on its way to Marion, Ark. from Los Angeles and had 58 cars and four locomotives. The two employees who were on board did not sustain any injuries.
The train was carrying mostly packages and parcels, and it remains at the scene of the accident as police conducted an investigation. Union Pacific will be sending its own employees to inspect the train for damage, and the track as well.
Police believe the overpass was coated with ice this morning where the bus left the roadway.
The train was able to stop shortly after striking the bus.
