Amazon Studios announced Tuesday that it has signed the critically-acclaimed director Woody Allen to direct and write his first television series, after decades of film making. And they signed him without reviewing a single episode or making any casting decisions.
Amazon has ordered one season of a TV show to be written and directed by Allen alone. The show will include half-hour episodes, but the number of episodes has not been determined. Both the title and the description of the series are also missing. However, it is set to premiere in 2016 on Prime Instant Video, and it is expected to be available in the U.S., U.K. and Germany.
Amazon’s Vice President Roy Price said in a statement that Allen is a “visionary creator” and has made some of the best films of all time. He praised Allen for his ability to remain at the “creative forefront of American cinema” and said that it is an “honor to be working with him on his first television series.”
Allen explained that he was unsure of how he “got into this,” according to The Verge. He admitted that he does not have any ideas in mind and he is not sure “where to begin.” He joked that Price may regret the decision to bring him on this project.
Amazon has yet to speak about the funding for Allen’s series, but the studio did commit to a show with hardly any details known to land Allen. He usually produces on small budgets, but big-time actors have been willing to take pay cuts just to work with Allen. As a result, bringing him on could bring Amazon actors they could not afford otherwise.
Allen has been writing and directing films for decades. He is responsible for films such as Annie Hall, Manhattan, Bananas, Hannah and Her Sisters and more. Recently, he found success with his films Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris. Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for best actress for her lead role in Blue Jasmine in 2014 and Allen was nominated for best original screenplay. Allen also won an Oscar in 2012 for best original screenplay with Midnight in Paris. He has another film set to premiere later this year starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone.
Allen’s films are generally made close together, so 2016 may be one of the first years a Woody Allen film does not arrive on the scene. However, the TV series will stand in place of a film giving viewers hours of material over a period of weeks.
But signing Allen to Amazon does not come without some controversy. Allen came under serious scrutiny in February 2014 when Dylan Farrow, his adopted daughter, accused him of sexual molesting her as a child in an open letter published in The New York Times.
These allegations have been surfacing for two decades. The first mention of abuse claims appeared in the 1990s during a custody battle. Allen has always denied the claims and was never charged with any criminal wrongdoing. The Verge stated that it is “not unlikely” for Amazon to receive criticism for supporting Allen.
