23andMe, a DNA analysis company, has formed an agreement with pharmaceutical company Pfizer to allow scientists to mine genetic data.
Individuals who submit their DNA for analysis by the company 23andMe can now opt to have their DNA results shared with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, as reported by engadget. The sharing of data will allow Pfizer scientists to study the connection between genes and medical conditions or traits.
Each person can decide if they want their DNA shared and all samples will remain anonymous, which means no marketing of drugs based on a person’s individual genetic makeup.
Pfizer and 23andMe will also be collaborating on genome-level studies, including one researching the genetic aspects of lupus. The study is expected to include 5,000 volunteers.
