The video specifically threatens United States, France, Australia, and Canada, and was updated to show images of the recent attacks in France.
A video from a few months ago urging ISIS followers to “rise up and kill intelligence officers, police officers, soldiers, and civilians” has been re-released with updated images from the attacks in France, prompting the New York Police Department and other agencies to go on high alert.
The video threat specifically names the United States, France, Australia, and Canada. The NYPD told employees in a memo to remain alert and “consider tactics at all times while on patrol,” especially in light of the recent shootings in France, according to a CNN report.
Similar alerts were issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which indicate that the latest message is consistent with threats from ISIS and al Qaeda.
However, John Miller, deputy commissioner for counterterrorism for the NYPD, cautioned not to overreact to the video. He said that he does not believe the NYPD to be under any more threat than they were the day before, and that the department tends to be on a high alert on normal days compared to other police departments.
A total of 1,000 NYPD employees, both officers and civilians, are assigned to a counterterrorism unit, which have studied the attacks in Paris extensively. Last week, 17 civilians were killed over three days by terrorist attacks in the French capital.
The video that was released is from several months ago, but has been updated to include scenes from the most recent terror attack in France.
The video stemmed from a recent “fatwa” by ISIS spokesman ABu Mohammed al Adnani, who urged “lone wolves” to attack Western nations back in September.
The spree began in Paris when gunmen stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine that often lampooned Islam among other religions, and killed 12 people before fleeing. The next day, a female police officer was gunned down in a Paris suburb, and on Friday, all of the gunmen were cornered in two different locations, and shot to death.
