Curry leaving NBC News so she can "reach for the edge of the future in journalism" via a new media startup.
Sources at NBC News predicted last year that veteran anchor Ann Curry would leave the network at the end of her contract, and NBC confirmed with The Huffington Post on Tuesday that Curry is now officially ending her run as a full-time employee. While Curry was awkwardly and controversially fired from her co-anchor position on Today in 2012, she still says it was “a privilege to work with so many good and talented people” at NBC over the past 16 years and plans on continuing to report non-exclusively for the network.
In her press release on Tuesday, Curry revealed that she will soon become founder of a new media startup seeded by NBCUniversal. During the early stages of that project, she will continue to report non-exclusively for NBC News, which will allow her the freedom to report on “any platform and on any network,” as well as on “any online or ‘over the top’ channels.”
“This is about reaching for the edge of the future in journalism, which we know is undergoing an irrevocable transition. In today’s world of fragmented media, this is the time to seize the opportunity to improve the way we distribute and even tell stories,” Curry said in the statement. “I want to expand my drive to give voice to the voiceless to emerging platforms and produce both scripted and non-scripted content, in addition to continuing to report on-air about stories that matter.”
Fans of Curry will likely be excited about this new stage in the her career, since Curry’s journalism has rarely made it on the air in recent months. The network has been paying her around $12 million a year, but she’s only filed a handful of reports since June 2012, when NBC released her from her Today co-anchor position and instead made her a national and international correspondent and anchor-at-large. NBC News blamed Curry and her weak on-air rapport with co-anchor Matt Lauer for the show’s plummeting ratings, but the network only received worse press coverage when she was replaced with Savannah Guthrie. Despite all of the drama, Curry said that she is still “sincerely grateful to NBC News” for allowing her to offer viewers a “vast and diverse body of work.”
“I look forward to what we will do ahead,” concluded Curry in her statement.
