Amazon signs Woody Allen to write and direct original TV series

Woody Allen has a long history of successful film making under his belt, and now the Oscar winner will be branching out into penning and directing a television series as well. Amazon Studios is bringing Allen on to kick off their next first efforts at original programming for Amazon Prime’s Instant Video.

The series is expected to debut in 2016, but so far no other details about the series title or who might be on board as far as the cast goes. It is currently being referred to as the Untitled Woody Allen Project. Even Woody Allen himself seems a bit light on the details.

“I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this,” Allen said.

Allen was clearly just being modest, as his career has spanned over 50 years of successful filmmaking starting with What’s Up Tiger Lily in 1966 and of course encapsulating classic such as Annie Hall and Manhattan. Allen has directed more than 4o films, many of which he has also starred in, and he has also been awarded four Oscars and two Golden Globes.

Allen is also a successful playwright, comedian, and musician, and does not seem to show any signs of slowing down either. The filmmaker released Magic in the Moonlight just last year and has another film on its way.

The news of Allen’s involvement in the new TV series quickly follows a successful night for Amazon at the Golden Globes. Their original series Transparent was awarded not one but two Golden Globes, including best comedy series. No small feat for the show’s first season, not to mention that Transparent is the first television series about a transgender woman to double up at the award ceremony.

Amazon is of course in direct competition with other streaming services like Netflix who has made quite a splash with original series such as Orange is the New Black. Netflix also has a huge lineup of new original programming set to debut soon, including an original documentary style show with comedienne Chelsea Handler post her leave from her network talk show.

The competition is strong. Amazon and Netflix have also independently been securing the rights to exclusive content from television shows that have already run. Netflix recently debuted the entire ten years of Friends for streaming, while Amazon has been working on securing the rights to some high demand HBO programs. Hulu Plus is another player in the game who has been creating their own original content, and even YouTube has gotten in on the action to boost revenue through offering more professional programs.

Throughout the changes, Amazon is proving that they are not one to sleep on the opportunities and have really shined a lot of light on themselves this week. It is clear that online streaming services are certainly stepping up to the plate in redefining television as we know it, and Amazon might now be in the position to pull ahead.
