Golden Globes 2015: gambling on “Transparent” paid off big time for Amazon

When the award for “Best Television Series Musical or Comedy” was announced last night at the Golden Globes, many people might not have been expecting Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to receive a mention. However, “Transparent,” the new offering from Amazon available through their streaming service, walked off with one of the top honors of the night.

It was the first time in Golden Globes history that the Hollywood Foreign Press gave a major award to a streaming series. The bet on video content paid off handsomely for Amazon, who invested more than $100 million in video content in 2014. The award cements Amazon as a high roller in the television field alongside other established streaming services such as Netflix, which has received plenty of Golden Globes love for “Orange is the New Black” and “House of Cards.”

“Transparent” star Jeffrey Tambor, who plays lead character Maura Pfeffernan, a retired political science professor who ultimately comes out as a woman to her children, won the Golden Globe for best actor in a television musical or comedy series.

“This is big. This is much bigger than me. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press for putting us on the map and making people aware of our story.” said Tambor, appearing visibly touched in his speech.

“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway, speaking to Variety on the red carpet, admitted that she considered various networks for the show but ultimately decided Amazon would treat the series best. “You want to be somewhere where they’re passionate about you,” she said. “And they’ve been wonderful.”

In her acceptance speech, Soloway also recognized and thanked the transgender community, adding, “They are our family. They make this possible. This award is dedicated to the memory of Leelah Alcorn and too many trans people who died too young.”
