Texas man barricades himself in hospital room, upset over son’s condition

Authorities put the hospital on lockdown during the standoff, and the man eventually surrendered to police without incident.

A man barricaded himself in a Texas hospital room along with possibly a family member Saturday night, but surrendered to the police eventually without incident after the Emergency Room was shut down and the hospital placed on lockdown.

The man, who was unarmed, was supposedly distraught about a medical condition his adult son was suffering from at Tomball Regional Medical Center, and had been in the hospital room with his son in the hospital’s critical care unit, according to Fox News.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said that the man was holding two hostages during the barricade on Saturday, but police later clarified those reports by saying that it was not a hostage situation. However, authorities evacuated areas that were near the room as a precaution. No one was injured during the standoff.

Harris County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Ambriz said that police wanted to make sure everyone on the floor was safe and out of the way as they focused on bringing the subject into custody.

The man was supposedly very upset about the condition of his adult son, which resulted in a disturbance breaking out that hospital officials and the Tomball police could get a handle on, prompting the sheriff’s department to arrive.

Authorities did not release any other details on the incident, and it was not immediately clear what charges the man would face.

Hostage negotiators were finally able to get the man to surrender at 10:46 p.m., according to a KHOU report.

Ambriz said that he was threatening doing something to others, but declined to go into specifics. He said that the situation warranted the High Risk Operations Unit to be contacted in order to get a handle on the situation.

Members of a SWAT team swarmed the building armed with machine guns, and the medical center closed its Emergency Room, eventually putting the entire facility on lockdown and requiring patients to stay in their rooms.
