In the wake of the Trayvon Martin case, George Zimmerman, taken into custody once again. The 31-year-old Florida native has been arrested late Friday night on assault charges.
The argument began at the Zimmerman home Monday afternoon, during an argument with Samantha Scheibe, his new girlfriend. It wasn’t until his girlfriend is pulled over for a traffic violation, shortly after the fight that authorities are made aware of the issue. It took almost a week for officials catch up with Zimmerman to make the arrest.
Don West, the lawyer for the defense has released a statement to the media as follows, “He is alleged to have thrown a wine bottle in the direction of this person,” West said. “I certainly wish that I weren’t here this morning, as I’m sure he does, too. It’s been a devastating experience that he’s had, that he’s working through.” he also said “I don’t like to speculate emotional things either. It’s clear he hasn’t been very lucky with the ladies the last few months.”
He was taken by the Seminole County Sherriffs to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility after they inevitably caught up with him.
Zimmerman appeared in court for a brief hearing Saturday morning for the assault charge. The Seminole County Court Judge, John Galluzo, ordered him to return all the victim’s belongings to his lawyer and to refrain from contact with the plaintiff. The judge also made it clear that Zimmerman is not to enter Volusia County where is girlfriend resides. Even though there were no firearms part of the situation the judge also ordered Zimmerman to relinquish any and all weapons in his possession, including five guns and several rounds of ammunition.
Judge Galluzo has also released a statement on whether he will be on house arrest “Since this happened at Mr. Zimmerman’s residence and the victim lives in another county, I don’t think a GPS is necessary,”
This is not the first time Zimmerman has been in the legal spotlight. He had been acquitted in 2013 of the shooting death of the unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin. The self-proclaimed neighborhood watchmen had shot and kill Martin and based on a self-defense plea, received the acquittal.
Along with the Trayvon Martin case, Zimmerman has also had a few other problems with the law. He has received two speeding tickets in 2013 and a charge of pointing a gun at the same woman he threw the wine bottle at. As to the charges which stemmed from Friday night, Samantha Scheibe, dropped all charges. Zimmerman was also involved in a road rage conflict, late last September, which the driver of the other vehicle would not press any charges.
This has been the fourth time Zimmerman will be accused of violence since the Travyon Martin case.
Zimmermans lawyer, West, has been with him throughout the legal issues and will continue to defend him with this case. They are due to check into court on February 17, and if convicted, he can face up to five years in prison.
