Facebook use is linked to anxiety, depression in users

Facebook has become an everyday activity in the daily lives of millions of teens and adults across the world. Spending too much time on Facebook, however, can be detrimental to one’s health, according to various research studies.

Nearly three-quarter of adults use social networks with Facebook being the most frequently used, as nearly 40 percent of users check in several times per day, according to Nerd Wallet.

Nerd Wallet surveyed the research, highlighting the effects of Facebook use on users’ health – and the consensus is that too much Facebook can lead to lower self-esteem and anxiety. This is especially prevalent in undergraduate students, as one study found that the more Facebook friends a student has, the more negative effect it may have on their ‘academic and emotional adjustment.”

The health hazards also include sleep deprivation, as one British survey of 6,000 people discovered that an average adult spent 16 minutes on social media every night. The lack of sleep can elevate your risk of depression and anxiety, obesity, heart attacks and death,” according to Nerd Wallet. Facebook can also be detrimental when users compare their lives to their friends, also negatively contributing to users’ mental health.

The benefits of Facebook use are, ironically, about connecting with people – for instance, someone who may be going through a similar life experience or dealing with similar health problems. The social support could be prove to be a boost to one’s emotional health.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg noted that an average user spends 40 minutes on the site every day, which is more than an average American spends on the phone or checking email – and even more than average work commute times. That time “adds up to 280 minutes, or 6½ hours, each week and 20 hours every month,” according to Nerd Wallet. “If you cut your daily consumption of Facebook to 10 minutes, you would free up 30 minutes each day to spend on a workout or with family.”
