It may be a tough sell to the studios, as the most recent film -- which was released yesterday -- is billed as the final chapter to the trilogy.
Action star Liam Neeson has already reprised his role as Bryan Mills for the “Taken” series three times, with the latest film released today and described as the third and final installment of the franchise — even including the tagline “It Ends Here.” However, Liam Neeson said in a recent interview he’d be up for doing a Taken 4.
Taken 3 centers around Bryan Mills being framed for the murder of his ex-wife, prompting him to seek to clear his name by going after the real killers as he evades U.S. authorities and his former colleagues. However, unlike previously films, no one gets actually “taken” in the newest film, a major concern for Neeson, he said in a recent interview with Fox News. To do so again would have been insulting to the audience, he said.
Asked if there was room to do another Taken movie, despite this being the finale to the series, Neeson said that there is always the possibility of doing another. “I think if audiences go and see it and they like these characters, I mean, I’d love to do something with Forest [Whitaker] again, and if it’s in a Taken 4 scenario … great,” he said in the interview.
Taken 3 has so far been panned by critics, with just 11 percent of 70 reviewers giving the film a positive rating on the aggregator RottenTomatoes.com. However, the audience score was the opposite: about 73 percent of 38,161 users as of Saturday morning had given it a positive score, rating 3.6 out of 5 on average.
The film has been a huge money-maker for studios, with a budget of $118 million and box office totals of $603 million.
Neeson said during his interview that he had never envisioned doing a film series like this, mostly working in “little forays into theater” when he suddenly enjoyed the success of the first Taken movie. As a result, Hollywood has begun sending him more action scripts, which he said he was “thrilled to get the chance to do.”
