If you’re a “Breaking Bad” fan looking to catch a glimpse of the show’s main characters in the new spinoff “Better Call Saul,” the co-creators of the show have some disappointing news for you: don’t look for Walter White or Jesse Pinkman to make an appearance, at least not in the first season.
Peter Gould, co-creator of the new AMC series featuring crooked lawyer-for-hire Saul Goodman, gave the scoop to TV critics and journalists on Saturday at the Television Critics Association 2015 Winter Press Tour.
“In the spirit of full disclosure, Walt and Jesse will not appear in Season 1,” said Gould.
“We’re not saying it will never happen,” added Vince Gilligan, who created “Breaking Bad” and co-created “Better Call Saul” with Gould. “We’re not saying it will happen.”
“Better Call Saul” gives the backstory of Saul Goodman’s descent from a fairly straight-shooting attorney named Jimmy McGill to the smooth-talking ambulance-chaser who’ll take on any client, no matter how ethically challenged.
Bob Odenkirk, who plays Goodman, welcomed the task of mining the layers to this character’s psyche that hadn’t been previously explored.
“I had to rethink him,” Odenkirk said. “He’s a different guy. The guy you’re going to meet in this show is a far more dimensional character than Saul Goodman was on ‘Breaking Bad,’ a much richer character, but by necessity, he’s on screen a lot more and the story’s about him, and so I had to do the job of acting and reading the script and talking to Vince and Peter about the character and figuring out these new sides of the character.”
“Better Call Saul” premieres Sunday, Feb. 8 at 10 p.m., and can be seen thereafter in its regular Monday night time slot on Feb. 9.
