Shia LaBeouf continues to find his way into controversial situations. The notorious actor stars in the official music video for Sia’s new song Elastic Heart which already has the Australian singer/songwriter having to defend herself.
As the Daily Beast reports, the notoriously fame averse Sia created a viral sensation in 2014 by tapping 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler to star in her music video for her hit song Chandelier. A dance prodigy featured on the reality show Dance Moms, Ziegler made waves by appearing in a blonde bob wig and skin-colored leotard in Chandelier. She reprises that character in the Elastic Heart video, this time appearing in a gigantic bird cage with LaBeouf, who is also costumed in a skin-colored leotard. Performing choreography by Ryan Heffington, the two engage in various acts of dancing, fighting, and attempts at reconciliation.
Posted yesterday on YouTube, the video has earned over 3 million views and has sparked spirited debate over its appropriateness, with some viewers becoming upset over the age difference between Ziegler and LaBeouf. Sia, who directed the video with Daniel Askill, took to her Twitter feed on Wednesday to respond to the controversy.
“I anticipated some ‘pedophilia!’ cries for this video,” she wrote. “All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring ‘sia’ self states.” She continued, “I apologize to anyone who felt triggered by #ElasticHeart. My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody.”
LaBeouf and Ziegler have not publicly commented on the debate.
