Neeson earned $20 million for 'Taken 3,' landing him the No. 4 spot on Forbes' 2014 list of Highest Paid Actors
Liam Neeson’s latest action film Taken 3 has earned extremely poor initial reviews, but the 62-year-old actor doesn’t have to worry about how well the sequel performs in this weekend’s box office. According to Deadline, Neeson earned approximately twenty times more to reprise the role of Bryan Mills in Taken 3 than he earned for the original film in 2008.
20th Century Fox initially struggled to get Neeson to reprise the role of retired CIA agent Mills for Taken 2 in 2012, and it wasn’t until the studio agreed to raise his Taken paycheck of $1 million to $10 million that he agreed to participate in the sequel. In 2013, Deadline reports that Neeson was working on “closing a deal in the vicinity of $20 million” to reprise the role in another film.
Since Taken 2 grossed over $376 million worldwide on its $45 million production budget, agency sources were not surprised that Neeson demanded more money to be in Taken 3, and figured he should have an easy time getting double the money he made working on the previous film.
“Given the muscular box office of Taken 2, agency sources think Neeson could command $20 million-plus if he wanted to reprise the role — a mark once considered standard for big franchise roles but now reserved for the likes of Johnny Depp and Will Smith in the right projects,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter.
The Taken 3 payment increase helped Neeson earn the No. 7 spot on Forbes’ list of Highest Paid Actors last year, so it’s not surprising that when FOX411 asked the actor if he’d reprise the role again for Taken 4, Neeson said its a definite possibility.
“I think if audiences go and see it and they like these characters,” said Neeson. “I mean, I’d love to do something with Forest again, and if it’s in a Taken 4 scenario… great.”
