The son of action film star Jackie Chan was convicted on a drug charge in a Beijing court Friday. He was sentenced to six months in jail.

Jaycee Chan, 32, pleaded guilty to providing others with a place to use drugs or “hosting others to take drugs,” according to CNN. The Dongcheng District People’s Court also fined him 2,000 yuan, or $320.

Police raided Chan’s home in August and found more than 100 grams, or about 3.5 ounces, of marijuana. Police detained Chan, Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai and others. Police said both Chan and Kai tested positive for marijuana. Unlike Chan, whose maximum sentence was 3 years in prison, Kai was released after a 14-day administrative detention for drug use after admitting he used drugs in Chan’s home.

Footage from the trial aired on the state broadcaster China Central Television. In the footage, Chan was seen willingly confessing to the charge and bowing to the judge at the conclusion of the 90-minute trial. CCTV also said that Chan told the police he had been a drug user for eight years.

The singer-actor said that he deserved to be punished for violating the law. “When I return to society, I won’t do it again,” Chan said. Chan was quoted in the court’s official microblog saying that he hopes to earn mercy and forgiveness with his “future actions.” The court showed leniency in the sentencing since Chan voluntarily confessed. Chan was reminded by the court to “establish a healthy public image” and get back on “the right path.”

Chan’s 60-year-old father Jackie Chan, who starred in films such as Rush Hour and was named a “Narcotics Control Ambassador” by Chinese police in 2009, did not attend the trial. However, he expressed his disappointment and anger to media outlets.  He told the state-run news agency Xinhua that “he failed to discipline” his son and now the state is forcing him to get rid of his bad habits instead.

Jackie Chan sits at the top of the political advisory panel entitled Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. The actor claimed he did not use his connections to gain leniency for his son or interfere in the case. He also said that he hoped his son would one day become an anti-drug ambassador as well.

The younger Chan was among many other celebrities, including Gao Hu, arrested for drugs in 2014. And his case has pulled more attention to the growing anti-drugs campaign run by the Chinese capital. The program doubled its figures in 2014. In November, nearly 10,000 people were detained for drug use. This was described as the biggest crackdown in more than two decades, for it was virtually eradicated after the 1949 Communist revolution.

Along with the announcement of the numbers, a Beijing official on anti-narcotics revealed the government’s zero-tolerance policy for celebrity offenders due to the influence they can have on the country’s youth.

In August, several management agencies responsible for representing singers and actors signed agreements with Beijing officials banning the use of drugs in the entertainment industry. Agencies also had to agree to fire any of their artists who broke the agreement and the law.
