On Tuesday, a Massachusetts woman by the name of Katherine Kropas went to the hospital after experiencing stomach pains. That same day, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. According to the New York Daily News, the woman had been unaware of her pregnancy despite being nine months into it.

In most cases, it is pretty obvious when a woman is pregnant. The woman gets bigger and she often gets sick throughout the pregnancy. But Katherine said that she didn’t experience the typical morning sicknesses that most expecting mothers do, and according to an interview with WFSB News, she thought that the weight she had put on was due to the holiday season. But it turns out that it was actually her future child, who came out weighing 10 pounds and two ounces, and is completely healthy.

While the pregnancy and child birth were unexpected, the pregnancy was not a negative thing, as Kathrine and her boyfriend, Dan Keefe, had talked about having children anyway. The two have been together for two years.

Katherine’s case is highly unusual, but it is not the first case of such a thing happening. What Katherine went through is known as a “cryptic pregnancy,” and according to pregnancycorner.com, 1 out of every 475 pregnancies is a cryptic pregnancy. 1 out of every every 7,225 women learn about their pregnancy when they are going into labor. Katherine was that 1 out of 7,225.

Katherine is still in a bit of a shock that she is now a mother, but she is taking everything in stride. She decided to name the little girl Ellen Olivia, and she hopes to take little Ellen home on Sunday.
