Game of Thrones in IMAX

Game of Thrones is moving from the television to the biggest screen of all – IMAX. The hit HBO drama will show the final two episodes of season four on January 23 and January 29 in IMAX theaters across the country. In addition, an exclusive preview of the highly anticipated fifth season will accompany the episodes.

As of today, tickets are not yet on sale. The IMAX website is still heavily focused on the final installment of The Hobbit trilogy. However, complete theater information and ticket prices should appear online in the upcoming days.

The episodes will be digitally remastered for the IMAX screen, the standard size of which is 72 feet by 53 feet.

The two Emmy nominated episodes are among the most technically impressive of the series. The unprecedented CGI and camera work of these episodes include the over-the-wall shot as well as a 360-degree fight scene. “The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format,” said Pamela Levine, chief marketing officer at HBO.

If the screening of these two episodes does well, more may follow. Additionally, HBO may become more receptive to George R. R. Martin’s request of ‘seven seasons and a movie’. The deal between IMAX and HBO has the potential to be highly lucrative.

Season five of Game of Thrones is still several months away. No official date has been set for the premiere though it will most likely be in the spring. Few details about the upcoming season are known. Unquestionably, the exclusive IMAX trailer for season five will make its way to YouTube within days of its release.
